Director of Finance & Business Services
Candidate information

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the RSPCA, and in this role. I think it's one of the most significant jobs to which we’ll be recruiting in the next few years, and I’m very much looking forward to meeting some impressive, stimulating and thought-provoking candidates.

The context in which the RSPCA operates has changed a great deal since our last strategy was launched in 2017. The world is changing at a rapid pace; from the growing climate emergency and the post-Brexit trade environment, to the recognition of loneliness in our society and the changing nature of how we live, work and interact, not least as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes, and many others, will have clear implications for animal welfare: and the RSPCA needs to innovate, change and refocus its activities to ensure it can best protect and improve animal welfare.

Our new strategy is deliberately ambitious, and we recognise that it takes all of us to create a world that is kinder to animals. But we also recognise we can’t do it alone. To achieve our ambitious aims for animal welfare, we will partner with volunteers, communities, RSPCA branches, colleagues in the welfare sector and beyond, to reach the animals who need us most.

After the year we’ve all just been through, financial stability and resilience is an absolute priority for many charities, and the Society is no exception. All of our fundamental indicators are relatively healthy, but there have been difficult decisions on the way. We recognise that we need to take a continuous improvement approach to all of our financial and business processes and strategies, and while we’ve already identified some clear priorities from day one, I’m also expecting to be told what I’ve missed off that list, once you’re in post.

I would like to hear from candidates who can work independently and as part of a senior team, but who are actively choosing to join a major organisation, where the multiplier effect means their work and talent can have the greatest impact. You’ll be a close colleague of mine, and will have significant Board exposure, which I hope you consider an attraction factor (on both counts!).

Chris Sherwood
Yours sincerely,
Chris Sherwood
