About the role

Director of Finance and Business Services
£competitive

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), you will be responsible for providing financial leadership and strategic advice to the CEO, the ELT and the RSPCA Board of Trustees, and be the lead director at key finance and investment committees. These will include liasing with the Treasurer/Deputy Treasurer on the Society’s financial strategy, and acting as Executive lead on the Investment Committee and Finance, Audit and Risk Committee.

You’ll have overall responsibility for developing, implementing and overseeing the Society’s financial strategy and risk framework, for ensuring effective financial management and control throughout the Society, and for ensuring the effective use of charitable funds in a way which is aligned with our priorities. Working closely with the Director of Strategy and Transformation, you’ll support the progress of large-scale change programmes. This will include taking strategic oversight of the Estates/Property function and acting as sponsor to the Real Estate transformation project, which is responding to changing working practices and surplus space. Within the ELT, you’ll provide an expert long-term view on all areas of finance, including financial planning, analysis and projections, procurement, data protection and risk management, always ensuring key stakeholders and Board members are kept informed of key trends.

On a wider canvas, you will oversee the development and enhancement of business systems across the organisation, and continue our steady progress with the management and refinement of IT infrastructure and services. Responsible for developing a new procurement strategy to achieve significant savings, you must also be able to run sophisticated sensitivity testing and advise the Board on cashflow, investments and reserves. And it goes without saying that you will be accountable for ensuring that all our financial operations are fully compliant.

Candidates must be highly experienced and assured, with a track record of decisive leadership in an organisation of similar dimensions to the RSPCA. Calm and credible, you’ll be a respected and visible part of our senior strategic peer group. You must be a qualified accountant, but we want to hear from people who bring more than just the FD skillset: for example, a nuanced understanding of business planning, IT, risk management, property, and/or data protection would be a distinct advantage.

Highly commercially aware and analytical, you must be able to show that you can lead autonomously, framing performance improvement as a way to help other parts of the organisation to achieve more too. Our approach to finance and risk is positive and strategic, and you’ll instinctively understand that this role is about good stewardship rather than just keeping overheads low. Collaborative, open, communicative and with a high tolerance of ambiguity, you must share an absolute commitment to the ethos and work of the RSPCA.
